| Sumeet’s
Song
This is one diva to watch. With an R&B sound that mixes ultra-modern
reggae, dancehall and hip-hop with echoes of old-school Marvin
Gaye melodics, Sumeet's got a sound that's all her own.
Add in a strong, versatile voice and a touch of Indian instrumentation
and you've got a recipe that's catapulted her songs into major
play on Canadian and U.K. radio, along with Sirius Satellite Radio
in the U.S.
Last year, two of her singles, "Agony" (with dancehall
celeb Elephant Man) and "Wine Me (2 Da Ground)" were
all over the airwaves. This summer, the song to listen for is
"Love Goes On," a catchy dhol-laced number from her
March debut album, "Deeper."
The slender Punjabi songstress lives in New York, where's she's
busy promoting her album and recording for a follow-up. But she
grew up on a farm in Canada, singing to entertain herself. "I
was a skinny little Indian girl with absolutely no friends in
the whitest city you could think of," she says, in a soft,
good-humored voice. "I had a lot of imaginary friends who
I sang for. Singing is just what I did."
Luckily for the rest of us, Sumeet eventually began performing
for more than her imaginary friends. These days, she's rocking
crowds from Miami Mardi Gras to DJ Rekha's Basement Bhangra in
New York City and clubs around the country. Check out her Web
site for upcoming gigs.
